Careers
We're a small team doing work that matters for organizations that can't afford to get it wrong. If you care about solving hard problems correctly — and want to see the results — we'd like to hear from you.
Who We Are
Matter + Energy is a B2B technology solutions company focused on two practice areas: Technology Spend Intelligence and AI Adoption & Productivity. We work with Fortune 500 organizations and federal agencies — clients with complex environments, serious accountability requirements, and no patience for work that doesn't produce measurable results.
We're headquartered in Reston, Virginia, with a discovery session in downtown Washington DC. We're a Woman-Owned Small Business with SBA certifications, which means we operate with the contracting flexibility of a small firm and the implementation depth that large-scale IT programs require.
We don't have a bench. Every person on the team is engaged in real work, with real clients, on problems that have real stakes. If that's the environment you want to work in, keep reading.
What We Look For
We hire for attributes that don't show up in job titles or certifications. These are the qualities that define how we work and what we expect from everyone on the team.
We close engagements when the outcome is confirmed — not when the deliverable is submitted. We expect everyone on the team to hold themselves to the same standard. If you don't know whether what you built worked, you're not done.
Our clients span CIOs and CFOs to engineers and data architects. The ability to work fluently at both levels — and translate accurately between them — is not optional. It's how we earn trust and deliver outcomes.
The first question is what the client asks. The second question is what they actually need answered. We look for people who understand the difference and have the discipline to get to the right problem before proposing a solution.
We're a small team. There are no layers between you and the work. We expect you to be the expert in your area, stay current, and bring that expertise to bear without being asked. If you need constant direction to produce quality output, this isn't the right environment.
Client environments are never as clean as the intake documentation suggests. Data is messy. Requirements shift. Stakeholders disagree. We hire people who are energized by this reality — not destabilized by it — and who can navigate complexity without losing sight of the outcome.
A meaningful portion of our work is for federal and defense clients. Understanding the constraints, accountability requirements, and mission stakes of that environment — and taking them seriously — matters to us and to the clients we serve.
Practice Areas
Our team is organized around our two practice areas. Most roles sit within one or span both. We also have a small operations and client delivery function that supports both practices.
Practice Area 01
Our TVM practice covers IT Financial Management, FinOps, strategic portfolio management, and cost transparency — powered by Apptio and configured to each client's specific cost model. We hire implementation practitioners, ITFM consultants, data architects, and client delivery leads for this practice.
Practice Area 02
Our AI practice covers agentic workflow design, AI governance and risk management, productivity measurement, and federal AI compliance — powered by IBM watsonx. We hire AI engineers, governance specialists, change management leads, and client delivery practitioners for this practice.
Delivery & Operations
Our delivery function spans both practices — covering engagement management, Solutioning as a Service facilitation, and the operational rigor that keeps deployments on track and on outcome. We hire project leads and delivery practitioners who can run complex, multi-stakeholder engagements.
Growth & Strategy
As we grow our Fortune 500 and federal client base, we occasionally hire for business development and marketing roles that require deep understanding of our practice areas. We don't hire generalist marketers or business developers — we hire people who understand the problems we solve and can communicate them precisely.
Open Roles
We hire selectively and deliberately. When we open a role, it's because we have a specific gap and a specific client need it serves. If you don't see a role that fits, submit a speculative application below.
We don't always have open positions posted — but we're always interested in hearing from strong practitioners. If you think you're a fit for our team, submit a speculative application below and we'll be in touch when the right opportunity opens.
Submit a Speculative ApplicationSpeculative Application
We review speculative applications seriously. If your background aligns with a genuine need — current or upcoming — we'll reach out. Tell us what you do, what practice area interests you, and what kind of work you're looking for.
We respond to every application that clears the minimum bar. If we don't reach out within two weeks, we don't have a near-term fit — but we keep applications on file.
